I originally wrote this blog, Sitting Like a Mountain, for National Mental Health Month, featuring a meditation by Tara Brach. I chose this meditation because, during the pandemic, amidst a dark night of the soul and existential crisis, I embarked on a journey to become an eco psychotherapist. Each day for a year, I sought solace in nature, listening to this meditation. It held and supported me through some extremely dark times.
Tara writes,
Meditation can empower us as we learn to access our potential for stability, strength and openness. This meditation calls on the image of a mountain as we awaken our body and mind to a full, vibrant presence and it closes with a loving-kindness prayer.
The mountain symbolises many eco-psycho-spiritual themes:
- Strength: A mountain stands tall and unwavering, symbolising inner fortitude and the ability to withstand life’s challenges.
- Stability: The solid foundation of a mountain represents a grounded presence, offering a sense of security and permanence in times of uncertainty.
- Resilience: Mountains endure through all weather, reflecting our potential to remain strong and resilient amidst adversity.
- Perspective: The lofty heights of a mountain offer a broader view, symbolising clarity and insight that come with overcoming challenges.
- Isolation and Reflection: Mountains are often places of solitude, providing a space for deep introspection and self-discovery.
- Growth and Achievement: Climbing a mountain symbolises the journey of personal growth, the pursuit of goals, and the satisfaction of reaching new heights.
Each of these themes offers powerful imagery and inspiration, reminding us of our capacity to find strength, stability, and clarity within ourselves. As we meditate to Sitting Like a Mountain, we can tap into these qualities, fostering a deep sense of presence and peace.
